FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Sacred Heart University in Fairfield will host a celebration and reflection in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. on Thursday, Jan. 21 at University Commons. Keynote speaker David E. Kirkland will present his talk, “The Truth That I Owe You: Making Black Lives Matter in Classrooms.” Kirkland is the executive director at New York University’s Metropolitan Center for Research on Equity and the Transformation of Schools. Midland Park High School Award Celebrates College-Bound Students
MIDLAND PARK, N.J. -- January is the fifth month of school and the time when college acceptance notifications begin to arrive. Midland Park High School noted that 18 students out of more than 50 that applied have been accepted to 31 colleges and universities and earned a total of $683,000 in merit scholarships based on student achievement. Valhalla High's Lucas van Bramer Gains Merit Scholarship Semifinals
VALHALLA, N.Y. -- Valhalla High School senior Lucas van Bramer was named a semifinalist in the 61st annual National Merit Scholarship Program. In the 2015-16 academic year, roughly 16,000 semifinalists will vie for about 7,400 National Merit Scholarships that are worth more than $32 million.Bramer, 17, is the only student from Valhalla High School who advanced this far in the competition. BRIARCLIFF MANOR, N.Y. -- Briarcliff Middle School’s sixth-grade students are collaborating, exercising their budgeting skills and applying their knowledge of energy as part of a hands-on engineering and design challenge in science class.“They are asked to apply the rules of the Law of Conservation of Energy, as well as potential and kinetic energy,” said science teacher Julie Gallagher. Citibank Closes Parking Lot In Tarrytown
TARRYTOWN, N.Y. -- Citibank closed its Tarrytown office on Friday and closed off the parking lot with it. The parking lot was shared as a partial municipal lot with meters, with use of the remaining lot when Citibank was not open.There was a contract with the village, but Citibank refused to extend the contract when it expired in December. This could affect downtown merchants, as many people made use of this parking lot. Wachovia owned it before selling to Citibank, and when Wachovia closed, it left the lot open for use by the public. SCARSDALE, N.Y. -- Scarsdale's Heathcote School fifth-graders took part in a live video lesson with a NASA educator at the Kennedy Space Center just before the holiday break.
