The new law backed by state Sen. Tony Hwang (R-28) and state Rep. Brenda Kupchick (R-132) is designed to protect a police animal or dog in volunteer canine search and rescue teams from intentional injury or killing. The bill is HB-67015, An Act Increasing the Penalties for the Intentional Injury or Killing of Police Animals or Dogs in Volunteer Canine Search and Rescue Teams. Westport Businesses Can Apply For Neighborhood Tax Credits WESTPORT, Conn. -- Businesses that contribute to municipal non-profit organizations and programs in Westport have until May 1 to apply for state tax credits. The town is now accepting applications for the 2017 Neighborhood Assistance Act Tax Credit Program, Westport Director of Human Services Sarah Heath announced. The program gives funding to municipal and tax-exempt organizations by providing a corporation business tax credit for businesses that make cash contributions to these entities. The Connecticut Department of Revenue Services sponsors the program. Affordable Housing For Seniors In Norwalk Gets $12.5M Boost For Renovations NORWALK, Conn. — Cedar Court Apartments, a senior affordable housing community in Norwalk, has received a big boost as it prepares to begin extensive renovations.   KeyBank Real Estate Capital has provided $12.4 million in Federal Housing Administration financing for the apartments.  The 91-unit property will designate at least 40 percent of its units for tenants earning below 60 percent of the area's median income. World Record Still Sinking In For Rower At St. Luke's In New Canaan NEW CANAAN, Conn. -- St. Luke's rower Nate Phelps said the fact that he recently broke a world record is still sinking in. Phelps, a Ridgefield native, broke the U-17 10,000 meter indoor rowing world record at the Maritime Rowing Club on Saturday, March 4. Phelps beat the previous record, held by Trey Holterman of Hillsborough, Calif., by 5.8 seconds setting a new time of 34:10.7.  “It’s really cool to have a world record,” he said.
